Hildale, Utah — Water Canyon High School is set to receive a significant expansion that will add new classrooms, arts spaces, and community-focused facilities, as the project moves through its design and preconstruction phase.
Water Canyon High School Principal Howell expressed enthusiasm for the project and what it will mean for the school community.
“We are excited to move forward with the expansion of Water Canyon High School and the addition of much needed new space,” Howell said. “As the Principal, I am thrilled about the new addition and the opportunities it will create for our students, staff, and community.”
Howell called the expansion “an important investment in the future of our school community,” noting that the addition will significantly increase the capacity of the current facility and improve the overall learning environment.
Howell’s comments came as the district was finalizing its selection of a contractor for the project. Since then, Washington County School District has awarded the construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) contract to Bud Mahas Construction, and the architect and contractor are now working through the design and preconstruction process. Construction is anticipated to begin around March 2027, with completion targeted for around March 2029. The project’s Fixed Limit of Construction Cost is set at $12 million, though the final construction price may differ.
What’s Included in the Expansion
The expansion is split into two sections. The north side will be a single-story addition featuring a larger, more functional commons area and a kitchen designed to serve hot meals. This section will also include a new exterior entrance into the gym, along with a concession area and additional restrooms to better support after-school events and activities.
The south side of the building will be two stories. The main floor will house a new counseling center, a standard classroom, and a dedicated music room. The second floor will add two more classrooms along with a theater room.
“We are so excited about the new and larger spaces for the arts,” Howell said. “These additions will allow us to provide more space and specialized areas that we have not previously had.”
Looking Ahead
With the design and preconstruction process underway, the district and school community are looking forward to breaking ground and, eventually, welcoming students into the new spaces.
Howell thanked the Washington County School Board and District Administration for their support.
“I want to thank the Washington County School Board and District Administration for supporting and funding this project,” Howell said. “It will be a wonderful and much needed addition to our school.”
