Colorado City, AZ – Voters in the Town of Colorado City went to the polls on July 21 for the town’s primary election, casting ballots for mayor, one two-year council term, and three four-year council terms. With every race decided in the primary, there will be no election for mayor or council seats in November.
Mayor’s Race
Howard Ream won a second term as mayor with 201 votes, running unopposed.
Two-Year Council Term
Laura Timpson claimed the single open two-year council seat with 186 votes, marking her first elected term. The seat became open after Nathan Burnham resigned from the council last year.
Four-Year Council Terms (3 Seats)
The race for the three four-year council seats featured five candidates, including two incumbents seeking second terms:
John Chatwin (incumbent, second term) – 150 votes
Dalton Barlow (incumbent, second term) – 127 votes
Dale Barlow (first elected term) – 111 votes
Shelly Barlow – 97 votes
Lacy Blackmore – 90 votes
Incumbent Alma Hammon chose not to seek re-election, leaving the seat open in this race.
Under the town’s primary election rules, a candidate must receive more than 50% of the average vote per seat to be declared elected outright, avoiding a runoff in the November general election. That threshold is calculated by dividing the total votes cast in the race by the number of open seats, then dividing that average in half:
The top three vote-getters — John Chatwin, Dalton Barlow, and Dale Barlow — each cleared the 95-vote threshold and win the seats outright.
Because the top three finishers all exceeded the 50% threshold, the seats are decided in the primary, and there will be no November election for these council seats.
What’s Next
With Howard Ream elected to a second term as mayor, Laura Timpson winning her first elected term on the council, and John Chatwin and Dalton Barlow returning for second terms alongside newcomer Dale Barlow in his first elected term, every seat on the ballot was settled in the primary. Colorado City voters will not see a mayoral or council race on the November ballot. These official results will be canvassed by the Town Council at its next meeting on August 10.
