El Capitan and Cottonwood campuses showcase cross-curricular learning through vibrant displays of student work
Colorado City Public Schools’ El Capitan and Cottonwood campuses recently transformed into dynamic galleries during their annual schoolwide Art Shows, offering students a platform to demonstrate learning through creative expression.
The events featured work from every grade level, with projects ranging from charcoal still-life drawings and literary blackout poetry to hands-on science models and cultural exhibits. The diverse displays illustrated how art serves as a bridge connecting core academic subjects with creative thinking.
Families and community members filled the hallways, examining student work and offering encouraging feedback. Many noted the originality and expressive power evident in each piece, while students themselves found inspiration in viewing their classmates’ creations.
“Parents praised the creativity, detail, and depth of thought woven into every project,” observers noted during the exhibition.
Cottonwood Principal Ms. Natalie recognized the dedication of her teaching staff. “She expressed her appreciation for the extra work that the teachers put in to ensure a quality event,” highlighting the collaborative effort behind the showcases.
Teachers emphasized that these projects develop crucial academic skills beyond artistic ability. The assignments strengthen observation, writing, critical thinking, and problem-solving capabilities, demonstrating meaningful integration of art across the curriculum.
El Capitan Principal Richard Campbell reflected on the broader significance of the events. “The Art Show not only celebrated student achievement but also brought our community together—affirming that when students are given authentic opportunities to create, reflect, and share their voice, they grow not only as learners, but as confident, capable individuals.”
The art shows align with the district’s mission by providing students with creative outlets to demonstrate their understanding while building confidence and self-expression—skills that extend far beyond the classroom walls.
