New LDS Church to Serve Growing Colorado City Congregation
COLORADO CITY, AZ – LDS Members in Colorado City and the surrounding area are eagerly anticipating the completion of a new church for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, currently under construction on Central Street. But this project is more than just a new building; it’s a testament to community history and the legacy of a pioneering family.
The church will feature a place for Sunday services, classrooms for religious education, and a versatile space designed to accommodate community events, youth activities, weddings, and funerals. The building is designed to comfortably and functionally serve the growing number of Latter-day Saints in the area, providing a dedicated space for worship, fellowship, and community gatherings.
The land on which the church is being built carries a rich history. It was originally homesteaded by James Warren Black, a pioneer who settled in the Short Creek Valley. Black passed the land down to his children, who later established a family trust, named Black’s Oak Grove, to manage the property. In 1998, the Black family trust generously donated five acres of this land to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“It’s (the church) not a bad thing; I think it gives people a choice. When not long ago there wasn’t a choice, I think it brightens our community.” shared Arvin Black.
For many years, the Church held onto the land, waiting for the right time. As the congregation in Colorado City grew, the need for a dedicated Church became more pressing. “There truly are so many members of our faith who have prayed for this blessing of the building for so many years,” shared Genevive Hainline, an LDS member. “I also know of several families who would like to attend church but struggle to afford the drive to Hurricane (Utah) on a weekly basis.” The new church will not only provide a closer place of worship but also eliminate the financial and logistical challenges faced by those traveling long distances.
The new church will not only provide a place of worship but also serve as a valuable community asset. The multi-purpose space will be available for a wide range of events. This will provide a convenient local venue for important life events, from celebrations to memorials.
As the 24,000 square foot church nears completion, those involved in the project are pleased with the progress. “It’s a really pretty place to work and everything has been going great,” said Brandon Winegar, Superintendent for Grass Creek Construction, the company overseeing the project, highlighting the positive work environment and smooth execution of the project.
Construction is progressing and is expected to be completed by July 2025. The new church, built on land with such deep roots in the community, represents a significant investment in the future of the Church and the broader community in Colorado City. It symbolizes growth, unity, and a commitment to serving the spiritual and social needs of its members and neighbors. A public open house will be held upon completion of the building, offering community members the opportunity to tour the facility and learn more about the Church. Details about the open house will be announced closer to the completion date.
