A palpable sense of pride, anticipation, and emotion filled the air this past weekend as 77 students from the neighboring towns of Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah, marked their high school graduation. In a community uniquely bisected by a state line, this year’s ceremonies brought together families, friends, and educators to honor the graduating classes of both El Capitan High School and Water Canyon High School.

El Capitan High School in Colorado City saw 21 students receive their diplomas, while Water Canyon High School in Hildale celebrated 56 graduates. Combined, these ceremonies underscored a moment of unity and significant progress in a region where educational advancements have become a powerful symbol of change and emerging opportunities.

For El Capitan graduate Ashlyn Hammon, the milestone was a mix of emotions. “I’m feeling a mix of excitement and a little bit of sadness,” she shared. “I’m so ready for a fresh chapter, but it’s hard saying goodbye to the people and memories that have been part of my everyday life for so long.”

Ashlyn, who actively participated in sports, highlighted the strong camaraderie of her teams as a defining aspect of her high school experience. “There’s just something special about being on a team, hyping each other up, and making unforgettable memories on and off the field. It felt like a second family.” She plans to pursue a career in beauty, attending beauty school to express her creativity on her own terms.

Across the border in Hildale, Water Canyon senior Jennika Barlow reflected on her personal growth during her high school years. “I am happy to start my life, but I’m sad I’ll be leaving all my friends and teachers,” she said. Jennika expressed an openness to exploring the world before committing to a specific path, stating, “I’m not sure exactly what I’ll do after I graduate, but I want to travel and gain experience.”

As the Class of 2025 steps into their respective futures, whether embarking on higher education, launching careers, or seeking adventure, the Short Creek community celebrates not only their diplomas but also the individual stories, resilience, and personal growth each graduate represents. The collective pride for these achievements truly spans beyond just a state border.
