HILDALE, UT — A sense of overwhelming unity and anticipation swept through the Short Creek community as officials celebrated two pivotal milestones: the ribbon cutting for the new Maxwell Spring Water Fill Station and the official groundbreaking for the expansive Maxwell Park renovation project.
The event, which saw many attendees from both Hildale and Colorado City, emphasized that this project is not just for one town, but will bring significant benefits to all the communities in the region, promising a new era for local recreation and shared common ground.
Historic Investment Driven by Bipartisan Support
The Maxwell Park expansion is being financed through a combination of state appropriations and a Community Impact Board grant. This major investment aims to end the need for local families to travel hours away for quality recreational activities.
Utah State Senator Derrin Owens detailed the political efforts that secured the funding, noting the community’s renewed importance in the state legislature. Owens revealed that, in 2023, he brought Utah Senate President Adams to the park site, directly asking what the state could do to show, “you’re not forgotten, that you matter.”
The result was securing almost three and a half million dollars in a typically flat budget year, a clear sign that, as Owens stated, “you matter, and you’re not forgotten in Salt Lake City.”
Transformative Amenities to Serve the Region
The expanded park, set against the backdrop of the majestic Canaan mountains, will feature an array of new facilities designed to turn the local area into a hub for sports and community events, benefiting families across the border. Planned amenities include:
Pickleball Courts
A Full Football Field
Refreshed Baseball Diamonds
A Disc Golf Course winding through natural vegetation
Facilities to host local tournaments, festivals, and celebrations
Washington County Commissioner Gil Almquist captured the emotional depth of the project, noting how the community’s focus has shifted to the future. “I’ve sat right on that grass and cried, not only for the performers, but because of the last seven and a half years…the dedication you, your council, have for making this happen,” he said, adding, “You’re in the driver’s seat.”
Mayor Jessop: A Vision for Unity
The success of the project was attributed to the consistent, determined efforts of local leadership. Senator Don Ipson offered high praise for Mayor Donia Jessop, stating, “Your mayor was stalwart. She didn’t weaken. She took this head on with confidence, and the people of Hildale are blessed to have her leadership.”
Mayor Jessop, reflecting on the day, spoke passionately about the park’s historical significance: “Maxwell Park has always been a place of unity, when unity was hard to find. This is not just about Hildale; this is about all of us together creating something beautiful.”
She expressed deep gratitude to the Utah Legislator, County Commissioners Almquist, Victor Iverson, and Adam Snow, and local staff for lifting the project, reaffirming that the park will continue to be a place where “everyone is welcome to gather on common ground” and where families in Short Creek can thrive for generations.
Construction and Water Station Access
Construction has already begun on Canyon Street and will proceed up into the park. The park is scheduled for a temporary closure towards the middle of October, with the exact date to be posted soon.
Access to the new Maxwell Spring Water Fill Station will remain available throughout construction. The station is conveniently located at the corner of Jessop Avenue and Louis Street.
