History in the Making: Girls’ Basketball Team Hosts First Home Playoff Game

Water Canyon Girls’ Basketball Makes History with First Home Playoff Win

By Staff

Hildale, UT – The Water Canyon Wildcats girls’ basketball team made history last night with their first-ever home playoff victory, defeating the Millard Eagles 47-42 in a thrilling contest. The gymnasium buzzed with excitement, as fans participated in a spirited “Pajama Out” theme, sporting their coziest sleepwear to support the team.

The game was a hard-fought battle from start to finish, with both teams exchanging baskets throughout. Water Canyon’s defense proved to be the difference, limiting Millard to just 42 points.

“This year, all five starters—Martha Jessop, Alysha Cooke, Joann Barlow, Tammy Johnson, and Esther Nielson—had stats that were among the best in our state. Alysha was number 1 in blocked shots for all of 2A for a while, and both Martha and Alysha were in the top 10 in rebounding for stretches, which is incredible,” said Ben Klepper, Girls’ Basketball Coach.

Coach Klepper highlighted the importance of teamwork, crediting not only the players but the coaching staff for their success. “Aaron Cardon is as good a head coach as any I’ve worked with. Melissa Jessop and Collette Barlow were two of our best players and now assist in coaching the JV girls. Without their help, Coach Cardon and I wouldn’t be able to focus on the varsity squad,” Klepper added.

The crowd, filled with enthusiastic fans clad in everything from fuzzy slippers to full pajama sets, helped fuel the Wildcats’ energy throughout the game. “Having the stands packed with enthusiastic fans really played a part in the win. These girls fought so hard, and it paid off in the end. I’m so proud of all of them,” said Sherin Holm, a supportive parent who attended the game.

The Wildcats clung to a slim lead in the final seconds, and the gym erupted as the buzzer sounded, securing the historic win for the team.

“Our girls come in with little to no formal experience or training. They didn’t go to basketball camps or play in organized leagues. They are amazing in their determination, and willingness to keep learning and improving,” said Coach Klepper. “It’s about teaching instructional basketball while also helping them understand the tactical aspect of the game—learning how to play together and execute as a unit.”

With the victory, the Wildcats advance to the next round of the playoffs. The community is buzzing with excitement and eagerly anticipating their next game. The historic win, combined with the passionate “Pajama Out” crowd, has lifted the team’s spirits and fueled hopes for a deep playoff run.

Congratulations to the Water Canyon Wildcats on their historic victory!
