Local Woman Serves Up Community Spirit with Thriving Volleyball Leagues

COLORADO CITY, AZ – For Ada Hammon, volleyball isn’t just a game; it’s a passion that has blossomed into a thriving community initiative. Driven by a lifelong love of sports and a desire to bring organized athletics to her hometown, Hammon has built successful women’s and co-ed volleyball leagues that are now a highlight of the year for many residents.

“I have loved volleyball for as long as I can remember,” Hammon shared. “I grew up playing it and wish for the whole time there were organized sports here.” That wish fueled a lifelong commitment to advocating both adult and youth sports.

Straight out of high school, Hammon began organizing volleyball, even teaching a class through Mohave Community College at the then-new El Capitan High School gym. The overwhelming response led her to break out on her own, renting the gym and organizing teams. The leagues continued to expand, and when Water Canyon High School opened its gym, Hammon found a new home for her growing passion.

Now in their eighth year for the women’s league and fifth year for co-ed, the leagues have become a cornerstone of local recreation. “This was huge for the town because it was something fun to do ‘here in town,'” Hammon explained. “Previously people would have to go to St. George or Hurricane and enter in leagues there to play any organized sport.”

The leagues have been particularly beneficial for mothers, offering a convenient way to stay active. “Finding a babysitter for an hour to go play volleyball and then be home was much easier than several hours to go to St. George,” Hammon noted.

While setting up the leagues had its challenges, Hammon emphasizes the immense value they bring to the community. “Anyone that wants can join, and I feel like it has been a pretty safe and fun environment for people to socialize and have a good time,” she said. “It has been wonderful hearing some of the feedback. Expressions that this league is the highlight of their year. The gratitude people have expressed to me for me putting it together etc.”

Hammon is already looking to the future, with plans to start a 45+ league for those seeking a less competitive environment. This year, she has also partnered with Hildale City to run the leagues, expressing her appreciation for Mayor Jessop’s support.

“I could definitely not do this alone,” Hammon emphasized. “I have had a lot of helpers over the years, managing the league, refereeing the games, and helping with equipment, set up and take down etc.” She gave a special shout-out to Levi Knudson for his help with scheduling and tournaments, as well as her daughters and friends who have stepped up to referee. “It’s nerve wracking being a referee. Tensions are high during the games and it’s inevitable that some calls will be wrong, making players mad at you. I really appreciate them sticking to me and helping this become a success.”

Hammon also expressed her gratitude to Water Canyon High School for their partnership. “They have been so wonderful to work with and I’m looking forward to many more years with them. Having facilities like these in this community has been surreal. Growing up I never thought we would ever see it in this town. I am so happy with how things have gone this far and looking forward to many more years.”

Ada Hammon’s dedication has transformed a personal passion into a community treasure, bringing joy, recreation, and a sense of belonging to Colorado City area.
