COLORADO CITY, AZ – The residents of Colorado City will have a direct say in shaping their local government as the city puts out to vote its mayoral selection process. Currently, the mayor is appointed by the City Council from among its members, but a potential shift towards direct election by voters is being considered.
Arizona law allows for flexibility in how cities choose their mayors, with both direct election and council appointment being viable options. Recognizing the significance of this decision, Colorado City is seeking public input to ensure the chosen method aligns with the community’s preferences and needs.
Direct election, the more common method in Arizona, offers voters the opportunity to directly choose their mayor. This system often grants the mayor a stronger role in policy-making and leading council meetings.
On the other hand, council appointment allows for a more collaborative environment, with council members selecting one of their own to serve as mayor. This approach can foster consensus-building and shared leadership.
The Mohave County Election Department will be responsible for administering the upcoming mail-in ballot election. Voters can expect to receive their ballots in the mail starting on April 23rd. To ensure their votes are counted, completed ballots must be returned to the Election Department by the deadline of May 20th.
This initiative reflects a commitment to transparent governance and community involvement in Colorado City. The outcome of the vote will determine whether the city retains its current council-appointment system or transitions to a direct election model, giving residents the power to directly elect their mayor.
