The El Capitan Lady Eagles volleyball team from Colorado City has once again etched their names in the record books, securing the Regional Championship for the second consecutive year, a historic first for the school.

The Eagles, led by Coach Daisy, are riding a wave of momentum and a burning passion into the State Tournament this week. Last year’s squad made an unprecedented run, culminating in a silver-medal finish—the first time any El Capitan team has achieved a 2nd place state finish in school history. That run included eliminating top contenders, notably the then number one seed, Mogollion, before falling to Cicero Prep in a hard-fought four-set final.

Against the Odds and Ready for More

The 2025 regional title defense proved the team’s grit. Facing the number 5 seed Ash Fork as the number 12 seed on Tuesday, the Eagles delivered an upset victory, punching their ticket to the second round of the State Tournament.

“This is my second year coaching this squad and I have noticed nothing but hard work, dedication, and heart,” said Coach Daisy. “The passion in the squad this year is on fire and driven.”

The Three Amigas Lead the Charge

The team’s success is fueled by a core group of leading seniors, often referred to as the “three amigas.”

Samantha Hammon, a dynamic left side, is a force to be reckoned with, dominating the leaderboards in kills, serves, assists, and receives. “Samantha Hammon… is fired up and ready to continue to take down teams,” Coach Daisy stated.

Aiyana Hammon is the last leading senior who completes the trio. She is the engine of the Eagles’ offense, running the team’s entire 5-1 system as their only setter, providing vital leadership and guiding her teammates.

Fellow left side Ruth Timpson is another statistical leader who defines the team’s defense player who simply “never lets a ball drop.”

The Road Ahead

Following over 30 hours of travel for regional and state games, the team has been strategically staying in Scottsdale all week to focus on preparation and rest before the high-stakes tournament.

The Eagles will kick off their State Tournament campaign tomorrow, Friday, November 7th, at 10:00 a.m. against Joseph City.

Should they secure a win in that morning match, the Eagles will face a familiar and highly anticipated rematch: a chance to settle the score with Cicero Prep at 4:00 p.m.

Fans who can’t make the trip can tune in to watch the Eagles’ historic journey unfold on NFHSnetwork.com or via the live stream at El Capitan volleyball.
